Enigmail causes Thunderbird/Postbox to stall when composing

I've had a problem with Enigmail for a while. Occasionally Thunderbird will stall/hang when composing or replying to a message when the Enigmail extension is enabled. The stall is typically around 3 seconds. It has happened with every version of Enigmail for at least the past two years and at least Thunderbird 2 and 3, Postbox 2 and 3, and Windows 7. It happens regardless of how Enigmail is configured. There's very little evidence of it online, thought there are some unsolved threads here and there. I suspect that most people have not yet attributed the stalls to Enigmail.

Is anyone familiar with this? Given that it has been a problem for so long I suspect that either there is a fix, or that Patrick is not aware of the problem. I would offer the option that the problem could be down to GPA rather than Enigmail, but GPA has no business interfering with my new emails when Enigmail is set to do nothing automatically, so even if the hang is due to GPA, Enigmail should not be calling on GPA unnecessarily.

I've just enabled the debugging log for the first time, so I'll see if that turns up anything useful and post back with what it tells me.
